Parra’s “hEELs” too quick

Last night saw the return of the NRL up at Suncorp stadium with the Brisbane Broncos hosting the Parramatta Eels. The Nation was pumped to finally see some footy back on the screens and to see how the new rules would be implied. But Channel 9 had their own little surprise with implementing a fake crowd noise to help make it feel like a normal TV game to watch. Some loved it and some hated it, but hats off to Channel 9 for having the balls to try it. The funniest tweet we saw about this issue came from Renee Gartner comparing the crowd noise to a woman faking an orgasm lol.

Now back to the actual game. The Eels played some great attacking footy early and were on the receiving end of the new “6 again” rule to find themselves in the Broncos Real Estate. It didn’t take long for the Eels to expose some already tiring defense and cross the try line thanks to Marata Niukore in the 3rd minute.

The Eels kept attacking the Broncos after that and found easy yardage, but failed to cross the line after numerous attempts. When the Broncos finally got their hands on the ball for a bit, they too capitalized and young Brodie Croft showed us his audition for the next series of “Dancing with the Stars” as he side stepped and shuffled thru some Eels defense to run down the paddock and score untouched.

Both teams started to drop the ball and creep a few errors into their games, but some classic Michael Jennings brilliance saw the acrobatic Maika Sivo do one of his well known airborne diving put downs to hand the Eels a handy lead going into the Half time break.

The 2nd half showed more solid defense from the Broncos, but it took it’s toll in their petrol tank. The Eels started to press harder in offense and the Broncos change room heater was turned on to warm up the sheds for after the Final Siren. The Eels piled on the points with some easy tries to Gutherson, Jennings, Lane and Blake. Moses chipped in with 5 out of 6 conversions in a final score of 34-6.

There were some solid performances that deserve a mention for the Eels. Paulo, Lane and Gillard played well up front and Brown, Gutherson and Moses moved the ball around to perfection. Shout out to Mahoney who made a great comeback from injury and in the end the Eels “Heels” were just too quick for the Broncos.
